Relatum: Lee Ufan at Palais des Papes is the currently showing, site-specific exhibition of Japanese artist Lee Ufan in Avignon, France. Known for his work emphasising the relationship between matter and perception, the interaction of matter and space, and with materials ranging from the natural world to industrial, this exhibition involves one of the core themes of Ufan’s work, namely the idea of “encounter and infinity,” and specifically as Ufan says: “My pieces at the Palais make an opening in the flow of time, suggesting appearance and disappearance, infinity and encounter.” Stones in particular, such as the one featured in the accompanying image in Chapelle Saint-Martial, in Ufan’s visual language, “…are symbols of eternity, sublimity, and accumulated time. Placing a monumental stone in a room evokes the presence of a departed being.” Stones are for Ufan inner landscapes, with memories that span humanity’s existence, shaped by erosion and the passage of time.
